Week Three: College Football News and Notes
After the first two weeks of the college football season, we've seen some funny bounces and weird rolls. These are my impressions of the first two weeks. Could we have a season where we have as many as four undefeated teams? Florida, Miami, Oklahoma, and Oregon may be favored in every game they play this year and it wouldn't be surprising if any of them went undefeated. It would, however, if all of them did. It would be ideal if three or four of them did. I would love to see the BCS handle that situation. Has Steve Spurrier gone soft? The first half scores in their games so far have been 35-0 and 38-6 respectively. The second half scores have been 14-14 and 17-0. Spurrier has never been one to let up on an opponent, but this year has been a little different. Has he shut down to preserve his starters or is the second team not as good as we would have thought? It's just a little weird. I know it's only one game, but Notre dame looked bad. I mean really bad. I don't know if Nebraska is just that good or Notre Dame is returning to the not-so glory years of a few years ago. Bob Davie has said that this is his most talented team, well they better start to show it or the Irish will be doing that old coach search thing at the end of the year. Why is Chris Simms still the Texas quarterback? That is one situation I never I understood. He may have all the potential in the world, but he can't transform that on the field and you have a former Big Twelve Offensive Player of the Year on the bench. With Simms at QB, the Oklahoma-Texas game could be just as ugly as last year. Simms will not be able to handle a Sooner defense that may be better than last year's. That two point loss to Fresno State is looking less and less like an upset for the Colorado Buffaloes. I believed they were an eight or nine win team before the season and that still holds. Speaking of Fresno State, consider me the driver of the bandwagon. I think they are for real and the last real test for them is October 13th at Colorado State. If they do run the table and don't get a BCS bowl bid, something needs to be changed. Sports Illustrated named Oregon State their number one team and they promptly went out and lost and then had a tough time with a team (New Mexico State) that had been dominated in its two previous games. Can you say overrated? The Michigan loss pretty much guarantees a Big Ten team will not be in the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1947. The Pac-10 still has a shot with Oregon and UCLA. I always hated conference tie-ins. Especially the Rose Bowl, which tied up two conferences and much of the time left us with less than desirable match-ups. At least the BCS has one good thing about it. Do you really think FSU is as bad as it looked against UAB? Don't count on it. I don't trust Bobby Bowden and I'm pretty sure he is hiding something up his sleeve. We find out next week as Georgia Tech comes to Tallahassee. Big Game winners next week: Florida over Tennessee, Miami (FL) over Washington, BYU over Mississippi State, FSU over Georgia Tech, and LSU over Auburn. Later...
